‘AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN CELEBRATED’ is a large body of work paying homage to and celebrating women of color. It is comprised of large paintings and small studies, both sacred and secular. This series is divided into four components: Motherhood, the Iconic Woman Alone as individual, Children - the future and the Gift of the Elderly.
The heartfelt outpouring of appreciation, support and encouragement Ms McKenzie continues to receive regarding this series is the underlying inspiration for this body of work. “African American Women Celebrated” has been exhibited in Europe and within the U.S. as solo exhibitions and individual paintings are often included within large group shows.
The creation of this work is a result of the belief and generosity of longtime friends and collectors, John and Marilyn Breyo. The artist is profoundly grateful for their support.
Choresis, a sacred dance ensemble, performed a series of exquisitely beautiful dances in the Chapel at Wisdom House Retreat Center, Litchfield, CT. Janet McKenzie’s paintings were on the altar. The group originates from Memorial Presbyterian Church, Roosevelt, LI, New York.
