Ms. McKenzie creates studies, small paintings, to add variety to her line of work as well as to prepare for larger projects. Like her larger paintings of women Ms. McKenzie's studies also focus primarily on women.
The process to create a study differs from that of Ms. McKenzie's large work. Studies are liquid, mobile, and allow Ms. McKenzie to visualize a concept – ideas are quickly born and expressed. Typically, studies are oil on board and quite small (sizes range from 8"x10" to 20"x24"). The studies celebrate spontaneity and fluidity. 
The ability to see brushwork in the studies is important. "I find studies so enjoyable and at the same time I consider them to be complete paintings.
